Three things to do before tryouts

1

Get your physical

If you plan on playing any sports at IC Imagine, you must have an up-to-date physical on file. Might as well schedule that today to get it out of the way.

2

Open gym & pick-up games

Open gyms and pick-up games are not tryouts! They’re great opportunities to come play with other girls interested in basketball, meet coaches, learn drills, and walk into October already knowing what to expect.

3

Build a base

Running and ball handling are the two things you can improve on your own between now and tryouts. Twenty minutes a day is plenty, and it shows up fast in tryout conditioning.

Sign up for our email list to receive important updates about tryouts, open gyms, pickup games, team schedules, and other basketball opportunities throughout the year. Whether you’re planning to try out or just want to stay involved, we’d love to keep you in the loop!

Signing up is not a commitment to play or try out, and it does not affect team selection. It simply ensures you receive the latest news and announcements directly from our coaches.

What tryouts look like

Nope. Every year girls try out having never played on a team, and coaches are looking at effort, attitude, and how quickly you pick things up as much as at what you can already do.

Court shoes with a clean sole, athletic clothes you can move in, a full water bottle. Hair tied back, no jewelry and a good attitude ready to play!

Warm up and conditioning, then skill stations for ball handling, shooting, and defense, then small-sided games so coaches can see you play rather than just drill. Plan on an hour and a half.

Email the coaches before tryouts rather than after. Conflicts with another school activity, an illness, or a family commitment can usually be worked around if we know ahead of time.

Tryouts are free! If you make the middle school or upper school team, there is a $50 athletic fee that will be added to your account on Infinite Campus. If you have any issue with payment, don’t let it stop you from trying out. Come talk to the coaches about how ICI can help.

Work to do this month

Get your legs ready

Tryout conditioning is the part girls wish they had prepared for. Run three times a week, mix in sprints, and you will not spend the first session gassed.

Ten minutes with the ball

Pound dribbles, crossovers, and one weak-hand drill, every day, eyes up. Ten minutes daily beats an hour on Sunday and it is the fastest thing to improve before October.

Shoot close, not far

Start a step from the rim and only move out after five makes in a row. Coaches would rather see clean form from ten feet than heaves from the arc.

Mistakes Young Players Make

Every basketball player makes mistakes. Missed shots, turnovers, defensive breakdowns, and bad decisions are part of learning the game. What separates players who continue to improve isn’t avoiding mistakes altogether, it’s learning what to do after they happen.

Ways to Prevent Sports Injuries

Basketball is fast-paced. Players sprint, jump, stop suddenly, change direction, and make contact with other players. While injuries can happen in any sport, good preparation and healthy habits can help reduce the risk.
